Skylab
One day at a library sale I bought a used
book that documented the work
of the Skylab satellite, because the
photographs seemed interesting to me in
an abstract way. The Skylab satellite transmissions were
later computer-enhanced to yield
information about topography, weather and cartography that would lead to
the effective use and conservation of natural resources.
The men in the
Skylab satellite as it orbited the earth in
1973 and 1974 performed a number of tasks
to that and other ends. When I came
upon a group of snapshots, taken by my
stepfather, of men working on projects on
the ground, they became the impetus that
informed this group of watercolors. The
task of gathering
water at a spring, the
group of immigrant workers, a romantic
couple, and children at play connect in
explicable ways with the work done in space.
Exhibited in "Paintings, Drawings and
Books" at Rebecca Ibel Gallery, 2005* and
"Made in Ohio/Diverse Sources" curated
by Annegreth Nill at Riffe Gallery, 2005.
